Who We Are
The LCVIS is a Florida 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization whose mission is to bring together blind/legally-blind seniors/adults for education, support, and socialization. LCVIS was founded in November, 2003, by a legally-blind individual, George Bisbikos, who previously led a health and finance class at the Lighthouse of Broward County for five years. George is the Director/President of the organization, and he is responsible for all aspects of the organization including planning and implementing the programs for each meeting. He is assisted by his Vice President, Barbara Seitz, a retired teacher and supervisor of The Learning Center for Students with Disabilities at Miami Dade Community College. In addition to George and Barbara, at each meeting there are other volunteers who are dedicated and professional individuals.
Educational Speakers and Discussion
At each meeting there are speakers from various health, financial and community organizations discussing important issues such as nutrition, disease management, transportation resources, low vision technology, adaptive devises, talking books, hurricane preparedness, orientation & mobility training, and other topics directly related to the needs of seniors, adults, and the visually impaired. There is also an informative open discussion about various current news topics and items related to the needs and interest of blind/legally-blind seniors and adults.
Time is allotted at each meeting for members to be instructed and participate in exercises specific to persons with limited mobility.
Activities and Socialization
Activities such as bingo, trivia, checkers, cards and field trips that allow for socializing with one another are provided, which is important emotionally because of the lack of interaction in the vision-impaired community. Our members have participated in field trips to places such as the Hard Rock Casino, Jungle Riverboat Cruise, IMAX Theater, and White Cane Day. In addition, there are luncheons and celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries and holidays such as Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, 4th of July, etc. At several meetings during the year, there is entertainment by professional individuals or groups. In December of each year, LCVIS has a Holiday Party at a local banquet hall or country club which is attended by over 100 people.
Location
At present, LCVIS meets at Nob Hill Hall, Soccer Club Park, 10200 Sunset Strip, Sunrise, Florida. This is temporary until a permanent location is found. Any assistance in helping find a free or low cost location where we can share space and rent would be greatly appreciated.
